Despite early photographic evidence to the contrary -- and a few select themed birthday parties -- I was never really a DC Comics kid growing up. I'd chalk a fair amount of that up to the fact that, so far as these photo albums indicate, I didn't arrive on a rocketship from an exploding homeland, and was never independently wealthy, as the poor tailoring job on the Robin suit can attest.

Adele, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne To Perform At VMAs

Three big artists are ready to get the party started at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, August 28, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Adele, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown have all been announced as performers at the show, airing live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles next month.

This will mark the first time that Adele has graced the VMAs stage. The British chanteuse is up for seven nods for her emotional "Rolling in the Deep" video, including Best Female Artist, Best Pop Video, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Direction, Best Editing and the night's big prize, Video of the Year.

Brown will return to the stage, after making his unforgettable VMA debut back in 2007. His eye-popping video for "Look at Me Now," which features Wayne and Busta Rhymes, is up for multiple Moonmen at the big show, including Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Collaboration.

"I am excited about my nominations and to be back on the VMA stage," Brown said in a statement. "I have a special performance planned for my wonderful fans."

Wayne himself is also slated to take the stage. He's got some big nominations up for grabs at the show including best Hip-Hop Video for his "6 Foot, 7 Foot" clip.

"Being a nominee and performer on the VMAs once again is an honor because everyone doesn't get that opportunity," Wayne said in a statement. The event coincides with the August 29 release of his upcoming album. "Looking forward to performing on the show, and having Tha Carter IV drop the same week!"

The night is shaping up to be quite the gathering, with stars like Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West and Pitbull up for Moonmen at the show. Perry leads the pack with an unprecedented four videos earning a total of nine nominations, including Video of the Year, Best Female Video and Best Pop Video.

Ex-Cat Locke cut by Vikings

Just one day after getting the news that he was headed to the NFL to play for the Minnesota Vikings, former Kentucky running back Derrick Locke got word that he had failed his physical and was cut.

Locke reported the news on his Facebook page Wednesday afternoon, saying ?FYI- the Vikings failed me on my physical. Its all the info I can give right now and I will update you as I hear something.?

Locke did not indicate what caused him to fail the physical, but he suffered several bad injuries during his time at Kentucky.

Banker Optimism For Commercial Real Estate? | The Oakstone / LAX ...

The nation?s bankers are sounding more optimistic about the commercial real estate markets than at any time since the onslaught of the Great Recession in 2007. In their second quarter earnings conference calls over the past week, several spoke of plans to re-enter the CRE market or actually reported CRE loan growth already.

Bankers also reported increased demand from CRE borrowers and increasing competition for new business ? particularly multifamily. The level of interest in CRE lending was similar from both big banks and community banks.

?Proof of the increased debt availability can be seen in the significant increase in second quarter sales volume versus the same period last year,? said Chris Macke, senior real estate strategist for CoStar Group.

?$73.7 billion in sales were recorded in the second quarter 2011 alone; that compares to $44.5 billion in second quarter 2010,? Macke said. ?We haven?t see a non-fourth quarter number that high since the third quarter of 2007; and maybe most importantly up from $51.1 billion in first quarter of 2011.?

?What we hope to see next is an increase in the debt available for smaller acquisitions in non-gateway cities,? Macke said.

Part of the reason for the lenders? optimism is that the asset quality of the banks? commercial real estate books is showing steady improvement. The recovery in delinquency rates that began in mid-2010 appears to have resumed after stalling in the first quarter, according to Matt Anderson, managing director of Trepp.

Anderson is estimating that the total delinquency rate could fall to 5%, down from 5.4% in first quarter. If that proves true, the estimated drop would be the largest since this segment began to recover in mid-2010.

Anderson reported that early results suggest that banks also have stepped up efforts to shed problem Commercial Real Estate (CRE) loans. Larger banks particularly have stepped up their disposals of problem loans.

So as the problems in their existing portfolios begin to go away, bank executives were saying growth can begin as soon as this quarter and be a real driver of growth next year, according to Bruce R. Thompson, CFO of Bank of America Corp.

?As we look at that commercial real estate number, we obviously, don?t like to see loans going down,? said Thompson of what is still happening at Bank of America. ?At the same time, there was some stuff that you would have wanted to come off. We feel very good about where the commercial real estate portfolio is now and quite frankly, are trying to figure out places to do more commercial real estate where it makes sense.?

David Zalman, chairman and CEO of Prosperity Bancshares Inc. said his bank is going to focus more in third quarter on trying to come up with some pricing products for commercial real estate so that it can try to increase that area of growth.

James C. Smith, chairman, president and CEO of Webster Financial Corp. said commercial real estate lending represents a special opportunity for judicious growth. Strong originations in the second quarter more than offset a continuing high level of repayments; and the pipeline also has grown significantly, which bodes well for future originations.

Kelly S. King, chairman and CEO of BB&T Corp. in Winston-Salem, NC, said his company has a pretty good appetite for multifamily and expects that it can actually begin to grow its CRE book over the next several quarters.

Philip Flynn, president and CEO of Associated Banc-Corp., said his bank is starting to see a return on our investments for its CRE loan growth. In total, the Associated?s CRE and construction portfolio grew by $50 million to $3.9 billion in the second quarter. Commercial real estate will be a driver of the bank?s loan growth in 2012, he said.

The following excerpts from earnings conference call are typical of what we heard and generally reflect the overall current state of CRE lending.

Quality Participation

We?re seeing some very good opportunities at extraordinarily low [loan to values] with high-quality property owners that gives us the ability to participate in some real commercial properties that are, in fact, adding to that overall growth in our commercial loans. So, as we look to the future, we continue to see strength in that particular category. There is, in fact, as always the case, on that line, some properties that are driven by multiuse as we have talked about in the past.

But I think it?s important to recognize that some of these properties are very large properties that, in fact, we have discussions with regard to sharing some of those loans with others.

Growing Existing Relationships

On the commercial real estate front, loan balances increased $69 million, or 2% quarter-to-date. The growth in commercial real estate loans during the second quarter was largely due to expanding relationships with existing customers and new loans to new commercial customers.

Most of them are existing relationships. We are not going to just do a transactional commercial real estate [loan]. If some of our current clients had opportunity to get good assets, commercial real estate, we?ll be willing to finance that. In addition, some of them are coming from new commercial loan customers, who, in addition to the business, they have an owner-occupied warehouse, or sometimes, additional investments, and we will do that. What we are not going to do is somebody just coming in, along with one-off transactions, buying a real estate, or just want to refinance one property.

Here in California, the technology and entertainment industries are performing well, international trade is growing, tourism, agriculture and commercial real estate are also showing real signs of improvement, and in the geographies where we are located residential real estate continues to show some positive signs. Phelps loses 200 free again ? to teammate Lochte (AP)

SHANGHAI ? Ryan Lochte overtook Michael Phelps on the final turn of the 200-meter freestyle to win one of the most highly awaited races of the world championships Tuesday, reminding everyone he is a threat to replace his American teammate as the world's top swimmer.

Lochte touched in 1 minute, 44.44 seconds, with Phelps taking the silver in 1:44.79 while defending champion Paul Biedermann of Germany ? who handed Phelps a stinging defeat in this event at the last worlds in Rome two years ago ? settled for bronze in 1:44.88.

"I can't complain," Phelps said. I'm bummed I didn't win, but you know at the same time, with what we've done over the last six to eight months, I'm over a second faster than I was last year. ... So I'm headed in the right direction."

Lochte also beat Phelps in the 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke at last year's U.S. championships, then won six golds to Phelps' five at the Pan Pacific Championships in 2010 ? prompting Phelps' coach Bob Bowman to acknowledge that Lochte was the best swimmer last year.

Phelps led at the 50 and 100 marks before Lochte, who was swimming in the next lane, surged in front.

"I knew Michael wanted to go out just to clean water, so I knew I had to be in striking distance and just work what I'm good at ? those underwaters on each turn," Lochte said. "It's a big confidence boost. Hopefully this win will help me carry on through my other races this week."

After the race, Lochte hardly celebrated. Phelps shook his hand, signaling a friendly rivalry.

"He's the only person I'll even say anything to in the ready room," Phelps said. "We can joke around. He can hear my headphones with having them on my head, so we were both singing along to the music. We're super laid-back, super relaxed. We have fun. We love to race each other. ... We bring the best out of each other."

Park Tae-hwan of South Korea, who won the 400 free on the opening night of the eight-day meet on Sunday, was fourth.

Already energized by Lochte's win, the near capacity crowd at the Oriental Sports Center upped the noise when local favorite Zhao Jing of China won the next race, the women's 100 backstroke.

There was another American gold in the women's 100 breaststroke, with Rebecca Soni leading from start to finish in 1:05.05 to defend her title from two years ago. She beat Olympic champion Leisel Jones of Australia by a massive 1.2 seconds, while Ji Liping of China took bronze in 1:06.52.

Soni had been tapped by some to break teammate Jessica Hardy's world record of 1:04.45, but Soni swam slower than the 1:04.91 she posted in the semifinals.

While a whopping 43 world records were set at the last worlds, no marks at all have been set in a 50-meter Olympic-sized pool since high-tech bodysuits were outlawed at the start of last year.

In the men's 100 back, Camille Lacourt and Jeremy Stravius of France finished in a rare dead heat for gold, clocking 52.76 before celebrating together over a lane rope. The bronze went to Ryosuke Irie of Japan in 52.98.

Also, Lotte Friis of Denmark won the women's 1,500 free ? a non-Olympic event ? in 15:49.59, with world record holder Kate Ziegler of the United States taking the silver and Li Xuanxu of China the bronze.

In 2009, Biedermann beat Phelps by more than a second in the 200 free, taking down the American's world record in the process.

Biedermann himself acknowledged after that race that his high-tech bodysuit was partly responsible for his win and Phelps' coach Bob Bowman threatened to keep his star swimmer out of the water until the polyurethane suits were banned.

This is the first major international meet since the return to textile suits, and Lochte's winning time was far off Biedermann's world record of 1:42.00.

"In '09, I just did my thing. For the moment now it's more difficult for me," Biedermann said. "The suits helped. No matter what we are back in jammers now and that's all that counts."

Phelps and Lochte, meanwhile, will face each other again in the 200 IM later in the meet.

Zhao won her race in 59.05 to the tune of banging drums from the red-clad Chinese team sitting in the stands.

Anastasia Zueva of Russia took the silver in 59.06 and Natalie Coughlin of the United States, who led after 50 meters, earned the bronze in 59.05 to raise her record total to 18 medals over five worlds.

Gemma Spofforth of Britain, the defending champion and world record holder from Britain, did not make the final after suffering a bout of food poisoning.

Zhao attributed her victory to eight weeks of intense training in Australia after she was named to the national team earlier this year. The training left her so exhausted, she talked to her coach midway through about whether she could continue with such a difficult regimen.

"After I talked with the coach, I decided to stick with the training and after I came back to China, I was well prepared for the world championships," she said. "I'm very pleased with my result. It's great encouragement for my swimming career."

Coughlin led and was ahead of world-record pace at the halfway mark, then fell behind.

"I probably overswam the first 30 meters or so and that's very difficult to avoid, especially when you're so excited in the race and you hear the crowd cheering," Coughlin said. "But you have to be controlled and that's faster than I thought I was going to be at this meet so I'm very, very happy."

Defending champion Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa led the men's 50 breast semifinals, while American Mark Gangloff just made the final in eighth.

Phelps also had another swim, qualifying third behind Japan's Takeshi Matsuda and China's Chen Yin in the 200 fly semifinals.

Tipping Point ? My Very Worst Date

I decided to go on a date with this man who at one time worked at the same fine-dining restaurant I bartended at. They were really picky about who they hire, so I figured I would be in for a nice night of intelligent conversation with an appreciation for food & drink. We met up at my favorite restaurant in town. He was running a little late for our 9pm date, so I took my time in getting there as well.

After I sat at the table (at 9:21 pm), I realized the restaurant closed at 9:30, so I picked out several dishes (it was tapas). I also told our waiter that that is all we would order, since the kitchen was closing soon. I called my date and told him what I was doing. Instead of being sympathetic to the establishment, he showed up at about 10, and did nothing but complain about my selections?even though he had shown up an hour after we made our date.

The conversation was awkward. He talked about himself non-stop, and was condescending about my interests, aspirations, and lingered on my brief foray into fetish modeling. When the check came, we split it, but he insisted on paying the tip. I asked him how much he was tipping since we had been the only people in the restaurant for a good 45 minutes, it had been closed for well over an hour, the bartender had made us several drinks, and the busboy was shooting us dirty looks.

Now, I have to explain that whatever we gave our poor server, he would have to give a percentage to his support staff, his work had obviously been done for a while and he was simply waiting on us to leave so he could cash out and go home for the night. Since my date KNEW I worked in a place just like this, and he had as well, he knew that to hold up the whole establishment as we had done, required at least a 20 percent tip, if not closer to 30 percent. It?s karma, it was a 30 dollar bill, and leaving 10 bucks still meant that we were only spending 20 dollars for food and drinks for the both of us, and the server would probably get to take home 6 dollars after the bar and busser?s take. He sat there, did the math in his head, and said, ?oh I guess, 12% or so, it?s not like he did anything special.?

I was aghast at his inconsideration of the server?s extra time and energy, and told him no way. I threw in an extra 10 in the book and added that ?the way a man treats waitstaff is so indicative of his personal character.? He should know that the amount wouldn?t impress me when he said it.

?Well, I don?t know why you have to be such a c**t about it.?

I stood up, apologized to our server, and stormed to the parking lot. He followed me. I wasn?t going to even tell him what he had done wrong, but he got in between me and my driver?s side door, and still expected a hug and a goodnight kiss, and tried to make another date. Incredible.

Africa News - Syria's Homs governor says train accident ?crime?: SANA

Governor of Syrian city Homs Ghassan Abdul-Aal said Saturday the derailment of a passenger train in central Homs was a ?crime and a message to whoever says the demonstration is peaceful.?

Abdul-Aal, whose remarks were carried by the official SANA news agency, dismissed the accident as a ?sabotaging act.?

The Syrian TV said earlier Saturday that saboteurs destroyed part of a railway at al-Souda area in central Syria and caused a passenger train to derail, killing the driver and wounding a number of passengers.

The governor told SANA that a freight train traveled in the opposite direction an hour ahead of the accident, ?which shows that the railway was intact,? noting that the accident took place on early Saturday morning.

SANA said the train was on a journey from Aleppo to Damascus, carrying aboard 480 passengers, most of them women and children.

The state TV said ?the saboteurs? targeted at dawn Saturday a railway near al-Souda area and dismantled part of it, adding that the front carriage of the train caught fire and a number of carriages overturned.

Meanwhile, an official source in the Syrian Interior Ministry said the damage at the tracks ?aimed at committing a massacre against innocent passengers.?

The interior ministry has urged citizens to cooperate with policemen by reporting any information about criminals and saboteurs ?who are taking advantage of demonstrations to commit terrorist acts targeting innocent people and properties.? In a statement carried by SANA, the ministry pledged to fight ? decisively and strongly with those saboteurs.? Homs, about 160 km from Damascus, has been a focal point of uprising. The Syrian authorities blamed the four-month-old unrest on ? armed groups and foreign conspiracy? and stressed that it would track down gunmen who have intimidated the people and damaged public and private properties. The Syrian government said 1,200 members of the security forces and army personnel had died since the eruption of protests. According to activists, more than 1,600 civilians have died and some 10,000 have been detained.

Verizon promotes Lowell McAdam to CEO, Ivan Seidenberg stays on as Chairman
Ivan Seidenberg, the man who took the helm as Big Red steered its ship into the iPhone's waters, is stepping down as CEO effective August 1st, the completion of a succession plan that's been underway since last year. His replacement? Current President Lowell McAdam, who helped lead the charge to bring Apple's smartphone to the company's subscribers -- and who proudly stood on stage with Apple's Tim Cook to announce it. Seidenberg will remain Chairman for the time being to help aid in the transition, and while we're not sure for just how long that will be, we wonder if maybe he's not just waiting to pick up a Bionic before heading out.

Wu to talk with Congress leaders (AP)

PORTLAND, Ore. ? Congressman David Wu, who earlier this year apologized for bizarre behavior during his most recent re-election campaign, was facing calls for his resignation on Saturday over yet another crisis ? a young woman's reported accusation that she had an "unwanted sexual encounter" with the Democrat three weeks after his election victory in November.

A source close to Wu told The Associated Press the seven-term Democrat was planning to meet with congressional leaders in Washington, D.C., on Saturday to discuss the allegation, which was reported by The Oregonian newspaper.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said any potential outcome of the talks with congressional leaders is not known.

An aide to House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi declined Saturday to comment on Wu.

The allegation seemed to be boiling into yet another sex scandal confronting a member of Congress. It comes a month after Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., stepped down after getting caught sending suggestive pictures of himself on his Twitter account.

Late Friday, the 56-year-old Wu issued a one-sentence statement about The Oregonian's report: "This is very serious, and I have absolutely no desire to bring unwanted publicity, attention or stress to a young woman and her family."

Pressure was building on Wu to publicly address the allegation. There were also calls for his resignation.

"I'm saddened to hear this news. David owes the citizens he represents a detailed explanation," said State Rep. Brad Witt, who is running against Wu in the Democratic primary next spring. "If this accusation proves to be true, it's time for David Wu to resign and get the help he needs."

Another challenger of Wu in the Democratic primary, state Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian, said Saturday Wu should resign immediately.

"I think any 56-year-old man, especially a 56-year-old Congressman, that asserts himself like this on an 18-year-old girl, has got no business serving in Congress," Avakian said at a news conference. "There is nothing that can be explained that makes this situation right. He's got to resign."

Former Oregon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury, also a Democrat, called on Wu to step down now.

"Obviously I think the right decision would be to resign," Bradbury told the AP. "I felt that way (after previous reports of erratic behavior) and I feel that even more strongly now."

Earlier this year Bradbury announced he was supporting Avakian, and at the time called Wu "damaged goods."

Tom Chamberlain, Oregon AFL-CIO president, wouldn't speculate on Wu's chances to get the powerful labor group's nod in the 2012 election, as Wu has in past elections, but said "it's a high threshold."

Still, Chamberlain said "it's too early" to say whether Wu should step down.

Quoting anonymous sources, The Oregonian reported that Wu told senior aides that the sexual encounter last November with the young woman in California was consensual. The paper reported Facebook notes indicate she graduated from high school in 2010 and that she registered to vote in California last August.

The paper said the woman decided not to press changes because there were no witnesses and it would have been her word against Wu's.

The newspaper said its information came from multiple sources familiar with the allegation.

The Oregonian's report adds new troubles for a congressman who fought accusations of strange and erratic behavior during his re-election campaign last year. Seven members of his re-election campaign quit in January because of behavior that included sending a photo of himself in a tiger costume to a staff member and an angry public speech.

Earlier this year, Wu told The Associated Press that his erratic behavior last year was the culmination of a period of mental health challenges that began in 2008 as marital issues led toward separation from his wife. The couple's divorce proceedings are ongoing.

In a 2004 re-election bid, Wu acknowledged a decades-old college incident in which he tried to force an ex-girlfriend to have sex. His opponent in the general election tried to use the report from Wu's undergraduate days at Stanford in 1976 to show Wu wasn't fit to serve. Instead of derailing his campaign, the opponent's tactics were regarded as unseemly, and Wu won re-election handily.

Wu and his wife separated in December 2009 for reasons that have not been disclosed. They have two children.

Oregon's Democratic leaders were reluctant to discuss the latest allegation on Saturday.

"We're waiting to see what happens," Trent Lutz, executive director of the Democratic Party of Oregon, told the AP.

The Oregonian quoted sources as saying that a distraught young woman called Wu's Portland office earlier this year and left a voicemail accusing him of an unwanted sexual encounter in Southern California three weeks after last year's election.

The paper said the woman is the daughter of a high school friend of Wu's who has donated to the congressman's campaign.

Wu represents Oregon's 1st Congressional District, which includes part of Portland and stretches northwest to the Pacific Coast.

Wu was first elected to Congress in 1998. Each election cycle he is a prime target for the Republican Party, but he keeps disproving predictions that he will lose.

He has shown an unpredictable streak that has baffled some fellow Democrats. He sided with House Republicans in 2003 and voted for President George W. Bush's Medicare bill, then drew some attention at home for opposing now-former Gov. Ted Kulongoski, a fellow Democrat, who agreed to allow the Warm Springs tribe to build an off-reservation casino in Cascade Locks.

In a speech on the House floor in January 2007, he referred to people in the Bush White House as Klingons.

Congress has had a run of scandals that have led to resignations in recent months.

The month before Weiner's departure, Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., resigned in the midst of a Senate Ethics Committee investigation that was looking into steps that he took to cover up an affair with a former member of his campaign staff.

In February, Rep. Christopher Lee, R-N.Y., abruptly resigned after a gossip website reported that he had sent a shirtless photo of himself to a woman he met on Craigslist.
