Home & Family ? Blog Archive ? Effective Parenting Tips: Should ...

Is your daughter talking like she?s having a conversation even when no one?s around her? Has she been talking about a friend and acts like it?s there all the time even when you don?t see anybody? Chances are your child has an imaginary friend. This usually starts when a child is two years old and could last until she?s around six.

In some cultures, parents think their child has ghosts as friends. In some, parents are worried that their child is not acting normal at all. According to studies made by experts, having an imaginary friend is normal among kids. It is their way of coping up with stress or changes in their lives.

Let?s say the child needed to be brought to the doctor for a shot. This is not her decision, and the situation could stress her out. When you get home, chances are your child will attempt to take control of the situation by playing as the doctor and giving her imaginary friend as much shots as she wants.

Your child and her ?friend? may even hatch a plan to escape the doctor?s office. Being in control of the situation, even through pretend play is your child?s way of coping up with reality.

For a lot of children, their imaginary friend serves as their alter ego. They?re the one to blame when something gets spilled or broken. When your child reasons that ?Mary? made her spill her milk, take her explanation and then help her clean out the mess while gently reminding her of the rules she needs to follow around the house.

Do not make a big deal when your child mentions her friend. It?s unnecessary to make her feel funny about having an imaginary friend by asking to talk to it or don?t grill her about talking about someone who doesn?t exist. In the long run, your child will outgrow this normal childhood phase.
