Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt has been a coach in the college and pro ranks since 1995, when he started as special teams/tight ends coach at the University of Vanderbilt.
Whisenhunt took over the reigns in Arizona in 2007, and in his second season, took the Cardinals to the Super Bowl.
In his four years as head coach in Arizona, the Cardinals have a 32-32 record, a .500 record.
That .500 number is significant, because ProFootballWeekly.com did a ranking of all the NFL head coaches, and Whisenhunt was nearly at .500 on that list. He came in at No.14 out of the 32 coaches.
The PFW staff had this little tidbit to say about Whisenhunt.
?Get him a quarterback and he?ll look a lot smarter.?
Who was No.1 you ask? Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
Here?s how Whisenhunt?s fellow NFC West coaching brethren landed on the list:
No.20-Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll.
No.24-St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo.
No.29-San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh.
In Harbaugh?s defense, the PFW staff ranked all the newer head coaches lower than the more established coaches, and understandably so, because they don?t have a head-coaching resume to speak of quite yet.
Let?s end with Whisenhunt. I agree with their quarterback statement. If he can get someone at that position, either Kolb, Orton, Hasselbeck or someone else, then he will have that team in a much better position to win.
Look at what he did in their Super Bowl season of 2009 with Kurt Warner at the helm?
