What is SCORM? A Comprehensive SCORM Definition

SCORM, or Sharable Content Object Reference Model, is far more practical than it appears. The basic definition of SCORM is a collection of technical standards for web-based e-learning. SCORM serves as a model for open communication between the client side content and a host system, establishing standards for computer programmers to write their codes by an order to be interpreted correctly by other e-learning software.

So why is SCORM so important? ?SCORM means interoperability, which means saving your organization time and money when it comes time to train and/or further educate employees via web based e-learning programs.?? When you are ready to e-train your staff, you only need to download a video platform, any video platform, to run SCORM compliant e-learning content.?

In fact, SCORM was found by Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL), the research division of the United States Department of Defense, who began a testing initiative in 1996, in order to save the US government money. ?As of May 2010, 301 e-learning products were SCORM certified, and 329 were compliant.

One of the biggest benefits of SCORM is reusability. SCORM allows instructional components to be integrated into multiple applications. So, rather than operating several different LMS (learning management system) for different clients, SCORM gives you the ability to create one standardized system that can be translated by different e-learning programs clearly and easily.

Keeping up with technology, SCORM has gone through many upgrades, starting in January 1999 when the DoD tasked ADL to develop standards across federal and private sectors for e-learning.? In January 2000, SCORM 1.0 was released and in March of 2009 SCORM 2004 made its debut, using ?XML, and is based on the combined efforts of the AICC, IMS Global, IEEE, and Ariadne.
